Max easily avoided so, and snorted confidently. "Pfft! Of course she's okay with it!" The lie slipped off her tongue easier than Max thought it would.
Sora met this statement with skeptical silence, but if he had any misgivings, he kept them to himself.
Inwardly, Max was laughing hysterically and nervously. Of course Nexan wasn't okay with it, she should have said. No, Nexan would rather give her pills and make her stay in the same room for days on end. But Max was going to where the action was, far away from pills and recovery.
"Are you sure you're okay with this?" Sora said, this time stopping Max with a hand on her shoulder.
Maxsodin's foggy head pondered the question slowly. Was she okay with this, ready for it? It was hard to find a definite answer.
Max shrugged, still mulling over the question mentally. "Sure, I'm ready." She smiled. "I'll have you with me, won't I?"
Sora eyed her levelly. Now that he could see her face, stare into her eyes, he could see every lie that eased off her tongue, every fiendish thought that churned in her head. It was slightly unnerving for Maxsodin.
Max's shifty gave searched Sora's eyes. She sought confidence from their blue depth, and managed to control her slightly trembling body.
"Will you be fine?" She asked Sora quietly, now doubting that he was invincible.
His gaze didn't break once. "I'll be fine. And you?"
Max swallowed and nodded, no longer as hysterical and she had been. Her head was clearing.
Sora straightened up but didn't remove his hand from Max's shoulder. He smiled lightly.
"Then off to Halloween Town."
Max nodded again, her mind no longer in the present, but thinking ahead. Far, far ahead.
Sora gave Max a playful shake before returning his hand to his side. "It'll be good practice. You know... for the real thing."
"I know." Max's eyes grew more and more unfocused. It was like she was looking into the future.
But one good-natured clap on the shoulder by her brother and Max snapped back to the present. She matched Sora's carefree smile like only his own blood could. "Happy Heartless-hunting."
